Can You Buy ChatGPT Ads Through Amazon DSP? What Amazon Advertisers Need to Know

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon Ads announced on 10 September 2026 that select US advertisers can extend Amazon Ads campaigns into ChatGPT, bought through Amazon DSP as an invitation-only, managed-service pilot.
  • The ads are sponsored text and image units shown beneath ChatGPT's answers, priced on cost per click or cost per thousand impressions, and OpenAI decides when and where they appear.
  • Pilot advertisers get aggregated impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM and CPC, and Amazon has not confirmed Amazon sales attribution, new-to-brand metrics or Amazon Marketing Cloud data for this inventory.
  • ChatGPT ads are sold directly by OpenAI and its partners in 89 countries, so brands outside the US can buy ChatGPT ads today, but not through Amazon DSP.
  • The best early testers are US brands already running Amazon DSP in categories where shoppers research before buying, with a holdout test planned because sales measurement is unproven.

Yes, but only if you are one of a select group of US advertisers invited into Amazon's pilot. Amazon Ads now sells ChatGPT ad inventory through Amazon DSP as a managed service, with Amazon's team setting up the campaign and OpenAI's systems deciding where each ad appears. This article covers that Amazon DSP route into ChatGPT; OpenAI's own Ads Manager is a separate way to buy the same inventory. The partnership puts Amazon advertisers in front of people while they compare options in a conversation, but the measurement Amazon sellers rely on is not yet confirmed. Below are the key facts, what is still unknown, which brands should test it and how to run that test fairly.

What is the Amazon DSP route into ChatGPT ads?

Quote: for ChatGPT ads via Amazon DSP, Amazon is the buying and service layer and OpenAI the inventory and serving layer

The Amazon DSP route is a pilot that lets selected Amazon Ads advertisers run ads in ChatGPT, bought and managed through Amazon DSP. Amazon's announcement of the ChatGPT integration says select US advertisers are testing it, and trade press reports from the launch describe it as a managed service in which Amazon's team sets up and optimises the campaigns.

OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026 and sold them directly at first. The Amazon route arrived seven months later and adds a second way to buy the same ChatGPT inventory, using an Amazon buying relationship. Amazon calls conversational ads "the fastest growing engagement opportunity for brands to reach new and existing audiences".

Field evidence shows the pilot is live. In late October 2026, a marketplace analyst reported ChatGPT ads whose click links ran through Amazon's click-tracking server, including one from Delta Vacations, the first advertiser Amazon named.

Think of Amazon as the buying and service layer and OpenAI as the inventory and serving layer. Buying through Amazon gives you Amazon's team and billing, not control over what ChatGPT shows.

Who can buy ChatGPT ads through Amazon DSP?

Only select US advertisers invited into Amazon's pilot can buy ChatGPT ads through Amazon DSP. Amazon has not published the selection criteria, a self-service option, a waiting list or a date for other countries.

An active Amazon DSP account does not guarantee access, and neither does working with an Amazon agency. The practical first step for a US brand is to ask its Amazon DSP account team whether the pilot is open to it and on what terms.

Brands outside the US have a different route. OpenAI sells ChatGPT ads directly through its Ads Manager and through technology partners, and said on 21 October 2026 that ChatGPT ads were available to advertisers in 89 countries, with more than 100,000 advertisers having run campaigns. A UK or European brand can therefore test ChatGPT ads now, but it buys them from OpenAI or a partner, without Amazon's DSP or account team.

Where do the ads appear, and who sees them?

The ads appear as sponsored text and image units beneath ChatGPT's organic answers, clearly labelled and visually separated from the answer. The pilot includes product feed ads, which generate the ad's creative automatically from your product catalogue.

OpenAI makes every delivery decision. Advertisers cannot hand-pick the prompts or conversations their ads appear next to; OpenAI's system matches each ad to the context of the conversation. Amazon runs the campaign, but it does not choose the placement.

Only part of ChatGPT's audience sees ads. OpenAI shows them to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, and the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans are ad-free. OpenAI does not show ads to accounts it believes belong to under-18s, or next to sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health and politics.

That last rule matters for some categories. A supplement or wellness brand may find its ads excluded from exactly the conversations it hoped to reach.

How much do ChatGPT ads through Amazon DSP cost?

Three pricing questions for ChatGPT ads on Amazon DSP: minimum commitment, service fee, and whether CPC and CPM include it

ChatGPT ads bought through Amazon DSP are priced on cost per click (CPC) or cost per thousand impressions (CPM). Amazon has not published a rate card, bid guidance, minimum spend or the fees it charges for the managed service.

Prices quoted for ChatGPT ads elsewhere belong to other routes. Early reports of high CPMs and six-figure minimums described OpenAI's own direct pilot in February, and OpenAI's self-service Ads Manager has its own budgets and bidding. None of those figures has been confirmed for the Amazon pilot, so a plan built on them is a guess.

Ask Amazon three pricing questions in writing before you agree a test: the minimum commitment, the service fee, and whether reported CPC and CPM include that fee. Those answers decide whether the test's cost per result can be compared with your other Amazon DSP activity.

What can you measure, and what is still missing?

ChatGPT ads Amazon DSP reporting: delivery metrics reported, Amazon sales, AMC and ASIN data not confirmed

Pilot advertisers receive aggregated reports of impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM and CPC. That is delivery reporting: it shows the ad was seen and clicked, not whether the click became an Amazon sale.

Amazon has not confirmed any of the following for ChatGPT inventory:

  • attributed Amazon purchases, sales or ROAS
  • detail page views or add-to-cart events
  • new-to-brand purchases, units or sales
  • ChatGPT exposure or click events in Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC)
  • ASIN-level conversion reporting
  • deduplication against your other Amazon DSP and Sponsored Ads activity

Amazon has not defined "cost per result" for the pilot either, so ask what counts as a result before you judge it. Conversation-level detail will not arrive: OpenAI does not share chat content with advertisers, so there is no equivalent of a search term report.

The contrast with Amazon's own conversational ads is sharp. Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands prompts report sales, ACoS, ROAS and 7-day orders for every prompt. Until ChatGPT inventory reports against Amazon sales, treat it as an upper and mid-funnel test and judge it the way you would judge other Amazon DSP activity whose effect is hard to see in the console.

How does the ChatGPT pilot compare with Amazon's own conversational ads?

The ChatGPT pilot reaches people outside Amazon with little sales reporting, while Amazon's own conversational ads reach shoppers inside Amazon with full sales reporting. The four options open to Amazon advertisers compare like this:

For most Amazon sellers, Amazon's own prompts are the proven option today, because they report Amazon sales and already run in existing campaigns. The ChatGPT pilot is the option for reaching people earlier, before they open Amazon at all.

Which brands should test ChatGPT ads through Amazon DSP?

The brands best placed to test are US advertisers already running Amazon DSP who sell products people research before buying. These are Clear Ads recommendations based on the pilot's current shape, not Amazon criteria.

Strong candidates

  • US brands with an active Amazon DSP account and an account team that can request pilot access
  • considered purchases where shoppers ask detailed questions first, such as electronics, appliances, travel, beauty routines and software
  • new-customer acquisition goals, where the shopper is still comparing options rather than searching for a known product
  • non-endemic advertisers that use Amazon DSP for reach and do not need an Amazon sale to count a result
  • brands with accurate product feeds, clear differentiators and landing pages that match the ad's promise

Weak candidates

  • sellers expecting Sponsored Products-style self-service access
  • brands that need confirmed Amazon sales attribution, new-to-brand or AMC data before they spend
  • low-price, low-research products that shoppers buy without comparing
  • health, wellness and other regulated categories that OpenAI's placement rules may exclude

A brand that is not yet ready for the tests a product should pass before running Amazon DSP is not ready for this pilot either, because the same reach-first logic applies.

How should you set up a fair test?

Six steps to a fair test of ChatGPT ads on Amazon DSP, from written terms and baselines to a holdout and measurement

Set up the test so it can prove or disprove value without Amazon sales reporting. We recommend six steps:

  • Get the terms in writing. Ask for markets, placements, pricing, fees, minimums, destinations, creative review, targeting inputs and the exact reporting fields.
  • Ring-fence the budget. Fund the test separately from Sponsored Products and lower-funnel Amazon DSP, so a weak result cannot drain proven campaigns.
  • Record baselines first. Log at least four weeks of branded search volume, Amazon sales, new-to-brand share and site traffic before launch.
  • Plan a holdout. Use a geographic, time-based or audience holdout, because movement in your baselines will not prove cause on its own.
  • Define success beyond ROAS. Track reach, click-through rate, qualified site sessions, branded search lift and, where Amazon can report them, detail page views and new-to-brand sales.
  • Ask the measurement questions. Ask whether ChatGPT clicks and impressions enter your Amazon DSP reports and AMC, which attribution windows apply, and how conversions are deduplicated against your other campaigns.

Planned this way, one quarter of testing should be enough to decide whether to scale, wait for better reporting or stop.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to sell on Amazon to buy ChatGPT ads through Amazon DSP?

No. Amazon DSP serves brands that do not sell on Amazon, and the first named pilot advertiser, Delta Vacations, sells travel packages rather than Amazon products. Access still depends on Amazon inviting the advertiser into the US pilot.

Can you target ChatGPT ads with Amazon audiences?

Not as far as Amazon has confirmed. Amazon says its advertising draws on trillions of browsing, shopping and streaming signals, but it has not said those signals are used to deliver ChatGPT ads, and OpenAI makes the delivery decisions. Ask your Amazon team in writing which targeting inputs the pilot accepts.

Can a ChatGPT ad send shoppers to an Amazon product detail page?

Amazon has not published the destination rules for the pilot. Ads seen so far link through Amazon's click tracking to the advertiser's own site, so confirm with Amazon whether an Amazon detail page or Store is an allowed destination before you plan around it.

Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?

No. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and every ad is labelled as sponsored and kept separate from the answer. Buying ads through Amazon DSP does not change that rule.

Will advertisers see what users typed into ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI gives advertisers aggregated performance figures such as views and clicks, and never shares users' chats, chat history, memories or personal details. That privacy rule is why the pilot offers no search-term-style report.
